Chinese fund platforms bundle QDII funds into one-click orders as quotas cap daily buying

QDII funds tracking the Nasdaq 100 can now be bought in bundles on several Chinese fund sales platforms, because quota limits leave each fund accepting only small daily orders. Tencent’s Licaitong (理财通), WeBank (微众银行), Qieman (且慢) and Du Xiaoman (度小满) have added features that spread one investment plan across many funds with a single password check, China Fund News (中国基金报) reported on November 4.

QDII funds invest overseas using foreign exchange quotas granted to fund managers, and the total is limited. Daily purchase caps on single Nasdaq funds run from a few hundred yuan down to 10 or 20 yuan. On Licaitong, inside WeChat, a user can tick 37 Nasdaq 100 funds and set an amount for each, with the S&P 500 also offered. When a fund reopens quota, the system allocates money within a ceiling the user sets. WeBank covers more index themes but fewer funds. Qieman lets users rank funds by return, tracking accuracy, fee or time. JD Finance (京东金融) offers one-click buying only for active equity funds.

The launches follow a fall of more than 8% in the Nasdaq from its October 6 high to November 2.

  • 37 Nasdaq 100 funds in one Licaitong plan
  • About 117.5 yuan a day in combined capacity on November 4
  • 224 of 285 QDII funds down over the past month
  • More than 4 billion yuan of net outflows from cross-border ETFs in the last week of October

Why it matters: Fund distribution in China is won on the app screen, and with each fund capped, platforms now compete on how well they split small orders across many near-identical products. None of this adds quota, so a Licaitong plan that tops out under 3,000 yuan a month shows how little offshore exposure retail investors can buy through this channel. A fund manager quoted in the report warned that plans may stall when quota runs out and that QDII funds carry both overseas market and currency risk.
